Chris Peden's Cash Redux

True to its monthly cyclical expectations, the herd over at the Church of Dan has been flopping all over itself for the better part of the day in a self-feeding frenzy of hits on Presidential long-shot and favorite KSEV punching bag Ron Paul. They range from the usual innuendo in which Paul is said to enjoy the company of "racist/bigotted/anti-semite/homophobic/(your ad here) scumbags" to this critique wherein a commentator expresses an inordinately bitter offense at the loins that produced an obscure anti-tax pamphleteer who has recently aligned with the Paul camp. The most amusing by far though is an unusual attempt by the Lone Star Times crowd to promote the reputed fundraising prowess of The Honorable Chris Peden, the boy genius of Friendswood City Council who seems to believe that he can unseat Paul from his congressional seat by singlehandedly purchasing hundreds of dollars in banner ads on...well...the Lone Star Times.

While ostensibly undertaking a correction of the mathematically inept Houston Chronicle, author David Benzion has another purpose in mind - to show, as he puts it after repeatedly reminding his readers that Peden first attained his Honorability with the backing of KSEV, that
Peden has twice as much money Cash-On-Hand as Paul, no?

He is referencing, of course, the $143,949.92 that Peden reported "on hand" at the end of last year's 4th reporting quarter. This figure naturally seems like an impressive haul, and numerically it is considering that Peden finished the prior quarter with a stunning $363 in the bank. So where did this sudden cash influx come from? Another pundit from Dan-Land attempts to explain:
Read Peden's report yourself, and you can see exactly where the money came from. I’m sorry to say you’ll be disappointed, unless you consider people like a CPA, an orthodontist and a pastor to be “corporate masters.”

It’s also interesting to note that all of Peden’s money is local — it comes from towns like Houston, Friendswood and Crosby.

This intriguing take appears aside a critique of the Chronicle's shoddy reporting standards, but a closer look reveals much more in common than a simple coinciding placement. You see, the majority of Chris Peden's cash haul from the last quarter, and to be specific $150,424.49 out of $174,750.80 raised (of which $143,949.92 remain unexpended on banner ads), did not simply come from "local" addresses in towns like Friendswood. It came from one single address in Friendswood: 1878 Flat Rock Street, as in the abode of the candidate himself.

One "William Chris Peden" of 1878 Flat Rock Street, as in the Honorable Mayor Pro Tem of Friendswood, also happens to be the aforementioned CPA who keeps donating to the Chris Peden for Congress campaign. Let's take a look at what this "man of the people" has managed to give himself:

Donor:
William Chris Peden
Peden & Associates, LLP
CPA

Carry-over loan balance - $14,428.02

4th Quarter loans from Chris Peden to Chris Peden -
10/01/2007 - $129.33
10/04/2007 - $21.61
10/06/2007 - $99.86
10/11/2007 - $1,000.00
11/29/2007 - $12,000.00
11/30/2007 - $18,000.00
12/07/2007 - $59,875.00
12/10/2007 - $20,000.00
12/31/2007 - $25,000.00

Grand Total: $150,424.49

Of the remaining actual donations from persons other than the Honorable Chris Peden himself, approximately half came from his relatives, Messrs. Bill Peden, also of Peden and Associates, and Greg Peden, of the Alvin Chevron station each gave the maximum allowable donation of $4,600. Ellen and Lois Peden, co-managers of the Hope Village Tea Room. similarly maxed out, bringing the Peden Family's self contributions to a total of $16,100 for the quarter.

That places just over $166,000 of Peden's claimed total haul of $174,000 "in the family."

The moral of the story: when you can't raise more than a couple hundred bucks for your lousy candidacy from the common folks, it never hurts to cut yourself a couple of $25,000 checks. It also helps when the primary recipient of your advertising budget is willing to portray your attempt to buy a seat in Congress as an outpouring of neighborly support for your cause.

UPDATE

Lest there be any doubt about the Lone Star Times' intent to promote Chris Peden's artificial fundraising prowess, an astute reader informs us of the following original title to their article from its placement on google cache:
CHRIS PEDEN, CONGRESSIONAL CHALLENGER TO RON PAUL, REPORTS TWICE AS MUCH CASH ON HAND

An astute and insightful analysis of Peden's fundraising, with which (other than your misunderstanding of purpose, presumption of motive, hyperbolic rhetoric and ad hominem broadsides) I agree completely.

Not that there is anything wrong with the latter two. ;)

Peden's a scumbag! Look at his website and read the blatant lies and innuendo he uses to try to harm Dr. Paul.

Even if Peden WERE an honorable guy, I wouldn't support him after reading that tripe.

I'm sticking with what's worked, so I'm also donating to Ron Paul.

All those Pedenphiles can crawl back to the Washington D.C/Cintra/TTC groups and lobbyists with their tails between their legs and tell 'em that we are MAD as HELL, and we aren't going to take it any more!!!

David - It's interesting you claim the purpose was misunderstood when it was suggested that that thing was written to prop up Peden's fundraising numbers. The google cache still has the original title of the Lone Star Times's article.

Again-- your facts are accurate, but your understanding of my motive is misguided.

I couldn't care less about "promoting" Peden's fundraising numbers, especially since (I think we can all agree) his "prowess" in this field has proven itself to be incredibly lame.

So I'll try to be clear-- my purpose was to troll a little bit and try to bug the crap out of the most rabid of supporters of The Most Honorable Man in America, whose sanctimonious bullshit I have had a belly full of, especially after he has taken a cause I hold dearly (limited government) and succeeded in associating it in the minds of millions with racism, bigotry, and general "crankism".

The Paulistinians' behavior throughout this campaign has been tremendously annoying, and I enjoy opportunities to return the favor.

Peden having twice the money COH as Paul was simply the nearest prod with which to poke them.

David Benzion was caught in the men's looker room having sex with another dude in high school. And I heard him use the N word more than once.

It was all down hill after he found out his mom worked a donkey show out of thier basement. So please dont be to hard on him, because it seems he turned out to be a real human being after all.

Oh wait, I guess he turned out just like everyone thought he would, a troll. You dont deserve to eat the corn out of Ron Paul's SH@T, even though I hear your into this type of behavior now.

David Benzion said...

I rest my case.

Why does there HAVE to be a singular motive?

If LST gets to poke Ron Paul AND gets to push a KSEV/Hendee-favored pol AND gets to whack the Chron, it strikes me that the ownership of LST should be pleased with the trifecta.

No need to run away from the trifecta now -- embrace the Big T!

David, the only person associating it with racism & bigorty is you. I am sick to my stomach of phony, self-annointed "Conservative" spokespersons like you using the phony PC outrage of the Left to demogogue against Republicans. Go blog yourself. Wait...that's what you do every day.

I hadn't thought of the "trifecta" perspective... and while it wasn't uppermost in my mind, fair enough, I'll take everything I can get.

As for Uncle Ethan... it isn't MY fault Ron Paul spent years making money and building a donor contact list by pandering to racist freaks and conspiracy-minded nutjobs... now Paul and his backers want to pout and stomp their feet because others are going to hold them accountable for it... tough... you reap what you sow.

Phony outrage is right. The only ones outraged at Paul about alleged racial stuff also happen to hate him for plenty of other reasons.

It's an outrage of pure convenience, and Paul didn't reap or sow it. People who hate Paul for other reasons did.

David ben Zion: Having noted the reasons for your animosity towards Dr. Paul I must inquire if you have actually read and understand the context of the so-called racist articles that RP's enemies, of which I take it you are one, keeps talking about. I have read one in full, "The LA Riots", and excerpts from a few others. There is nothing in them that I would call "racist" except that the LA Riots one does discuss the behaviour of black men at a time when gangs of them were running amuck in Los Angeles in the early 1990's. They murdered 52 people, looted thousands of businesses, set fires and assaulted peaceful citizens. This behaviour was then excused by the authorities and $1.2billion was given by the Federal Government to help repair the damages. To my knowledge no-one was brought to accouint for the entire catastrophe and the police were told to stand aside as it was beiong perpetrated. The only racism exhibited in the whole disgraceful episode was by the authorities and their minions in the media who refused to condemn the criminals. This was the import of the article and it pointed to civil rights legislation and affirmative action policies, giving preferences to black people, as being at the root of the problems. In other words the article was criticising the endemic racism inherent in these group rights, which serve only to segment society, the more easily to control the disparate elements of it, a classic authoritarian strategy.

Dr. Paul is on record as stating that he did not write or edit the articles and certainly they are not his style. However he does oppose special rights for social groups and believes and teaches that all rights are individual and endowed by our Creator, not bestowed by government upon identifiable racial or sexual groups. The latter policies are inherently racist and sexist and that fact must be made abundantly clear to those who embrace group rights.

Oh bull David. You hate Ron Paul because he doesn't support preemptive wars for global democracy, so you've latched on to the whole racist garbage. If Paul supported the Iraq war, you wouldn't say a negative word about him.

And your evidence? Old, stale newsletters likely written by Lew Rockwell that the people of Texas heard about day-in and day-out during the Paul-Morris congressional race of 1996 (Paul won despite Morris' many television ads on the subject; guess the voters didn't really care.) A photograph of Ron Paul with some guy (Don Black?) who he had no idea who he was (like Paul is going to ask for a photo ID and run a background check before having a picture taken with a random supporter) and a donation from the same weird-o (like all of Bush's donors in 2000 and 2004 were upstanding, model American citizens).

You know deep-down inside that your attacks on Paul are unfair and straight out of the left-wing playbook. No one outside of some self-important neoconservative blogs gives two-sh**s about any of this weak accusations.
